But Lady Gaga has revealed that when she's stripped of her stage clothes in private, she reverts to her real name of Stefani too - especially in the bedroom.
Asked which name she would like to be addressed by during a revealing documentary for American television, the 24-year-old replied: 'Call me Gaga. Some people do call me Stefani. Especially in bed.'
When then asked if being Gaga in a romantic scenario would be a turn-off, she retorted: 'Especially then. That would freak me out. It’s banned.'
Stylised: Even on a day off, as seen here yesterday, Lady Gaga rarely goes without giant sunglasses and her trademark red lipstick
Public persona: The star has revealed that she ditches her stage name when she strips off her stage outfits too - and is called Stefani in the bedroom
The Lady Gaga 60 Minutes TV special will be broadcast in the US on Sunday.
The star, who dated on-off boyfriend Luc Carl for more than five years, is finding herself centre stage again after premiere-ing new single Born This Way today.
The song was initially due out on Monday, but the singer announced on her Twitter: 'Single coming Friday, can't wait any longer.'
It's the title track of her forthcoming new album - her second full studio LP - which is the follow-up to her debut 2008's The Fame.
The star, who's now sold more than 14 million records worldwide, also released The Fame Monster in 2009, which was originally intended as a re-release of her debut, but ended up including eight new tracks.
Her new song Born This Way meanwhile is already drawing comparisons with Madonna's 1989 hit Express Yourself.
The outrageous star has also been spilling the beans in her interview in the current issue of Vogue, which she also graces the cover of for the first time.
Her shoot inside sees the star in a white feathered ball gown, complete with short pink bobbed wig, bleached out eyebrows and crimson lipstick in one shot.
Striking: Lady Gaga sports a short pink wig and white feathered dress as she poses for this month's issue of Vogue magazine
In control: Gaga appears in a white dress for the magazine's March power issue
Appearing on the cover of the magazine's March 'power issue,' she is also featured in an extravagant pale green gown, along with a tailored white and black smoking jacket and fitted trousers.
And she isn't exactly shy about her own talents.
'Speaking purely from a musical standpoint, I think I am a great performer,' she tells the magazine.
'I am a talented entertainer. I consider myself to have one of the greatest voices in the industry. I consider myself to be one of the greatest songwriters.'
Gaga also talks about her unusual relationship with her fans, who she dubs her 'little monsters.'
'Sometimes, being on stage is like having sex with my fans,' she says. 'They're the only people on the planet who in an instant can make me just lose it.'
And it seems Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, is so dedicated to her fans, that she even went on stage in London with severe food poisoning.
'I don't know if you knew this,' she confides. 'But the other night, in London, I had food poisoning. I was vomiting backstage during the changes.'
'Nobody knew... I just Jedi mind-tricked my body. [I told myself] You will not vomit onstage,' she recalls.
Pretty in pink: The star wore a series of elaborate outfits along with bleached out eyebrows and a pink wig for the Mario Testino shoot
She may be on the cover of Vogue, but Gaga admits she finds it bemusing, considering her sometimes difficult schooldays.
'Because, as funny as it is that I am on the cover of Vogue - and no one is laughing harder than I am - I was the girl in school who was most likely to walk down the hallway and get called a slut or a b**** or ugly or big nose or nerd or dyke,' she says.
The fame: the 24-year-old singer also posed in more masculine outfits including a leather jacket and tailored black and white blazer
Gaga's Born This Way this May meanwhile is out in May, and she revealed in the Vogue that her next single Judas had a 'Bruce Springsteen vibe'. ( dailymail.co.uk )
