The former couple, who dated in 2001, has apparently stayed friends through the years. In 2009, Gyllenhaal brought then-girlfriend Reese Witherspoon to see her perform at Coachella. (Lewis also had a small role in Witherspoon's 1998 film, "Pleasantville.")
Still, Lewis' appearance was a surprise to many who thought Gyllenhaal, 30, would spend the night solo or bring a family member to the star-studded awards show.
The two didn't pose for pictures on the red carpet, but Lewis, 35, was never far from his side and could even be seen sitting next to him during the live broadcast.
And when Gyllenhaal, nominated for "Love and Other Drugs," lost out to "Barney's Version" star Paul Giamatti in the Best Actor (Comedy or Musical) category, it probably helped to have a friend by his side.
